The Dan Nicholl Show is on location in China this week, with a special edition hitting SuperSport at 20:30 tonight from the annual Laureus World Sport Awards in Shanghai
As an ambassador for the Laureus Sport For Good Foundation, Dan works closely with Laureus around the world, and his trip to the annual Laureaus World Sport Awards in Shanghai, is an opportunity to present The Dan Nicholl Show from China’s most populous city.
With Shanghai currently hosting top international sports stars and celebrities during the awards, The Dan Nicholl show – presented in partnership with BrightRock – will feature three all-time sporting greats: gymnast Nadia Comaneci, skier Franz Klammer, and rugby player Hugo Porta.
Comaneci caught the world’s attention in spectacular style at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, where she became the first gymnast in Olympic history to score a perfect 10. Aged just 14, she won three gold medals in Montreal, and followed up with two more at the Moscow Games four years later.
Klammer’s downhill run at the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck is still widely regarded as the greatest ever; a fearless descent that afforded him a famous victory. Klammer also won a remarkable 26 World Cup races in his career.
Rugby fans will recall Porta scoring all 21 points when the South American Jaguars defeated the Springboks in 1982. As well as being Argentina’s greatest ever rugby player, Porta also spent four years in South Africa as Argentina’s ambassador from 1991 to 1995, and has fond memories of his time there.
In keeping with the Laureus theme, tonight’s show also features a visit to the Laureus-backed Fight With Insight project, with Idols judge Unathi Msengana and her husband Thomas, 5FM’s popular weekend breakfast presenter, joining Dan in Hillbrow.
“Being a Laureus ambassador is a huge honour, and to be able to celebrate that this week by shooting the show in Shanghai is a terrific opportunity,” said Dan, from Shanghai. “And to have three sporting icons in Nadia, Franz and Hugo on the show makes it all the more special. They’re great characters, and are extremely passionate about sport, which makes them perfect guests for the show!”
