Swazi-born defender Bongani Khumalo is best known for his international goal against France in the South African hosted 2010 FIFA World Cup. Even though this is a great achievement, there’s so much more to Khumalo than his football talents.
Bongani agrees that his goal for the National South African Football team was a very special moment, not only in the hearts of Bafana Bafana fans but also, for the image of football in South Africa overall. Admittedly, he didn’t realise the impact that the goal had until after the fact, in his own wise words; “…you have to focus on the game, not the event.” The joy was tangible when the nation witnessed the following, during the 2010 FIFA World Cup:
In 2011, Bongani Khumalo was signed by Tottenham Hotspur. It was a surreal experience to train and play with some of the biggest names in football, Bongani describes practice as almost like “pitching up for a music video.”
To end off, Bongani has given the #LoveChange Showcase an extraordinary gift- his first jersey as a captain in the African Cup of Nations AND it’s signed by the whole squad. Very special indeed.
